Troubleshooting Steps When an NFC Business Card Does Not Respond

If an NFC business card does not respond when tapped, do not repeat the same action multiple times. Instead, determine whether "no notification appears," "a notification appears but the page does not open," or "a different page opens." What you need to check depends on where the process stops.

If you are in the middle of exchanging business cards, you can first share your contact information using another method, such as a QR code. Check the device settings later, and try not to keep the other person waiting too long.

This article is a general troubleshooting guide for users based on official materials reviewed on October 26, 2026. Operation may vary depending on the model, OS, and NFC business card specifications, and does not guarantee compatibility with all devices. It is not the result of comparative testing on actual devices, but rather an organized order of troubleshooting steps.

The 3 Symptoms to Distinguish First

Current Status What to Check First Immediate Action
No notification or screen change Device compatibility, screen status, NFC settings, reading position If difficult, switch to QR sharing
Notification appears, but the page does not open Whether the notification was opened, network connection, destination link Check if the same profile opens from the QR code
The page opens, but the content is different Business card and profile settings, display destination Confirm the correct sharing destination before handing it over

This table does not determine the cause. For example, even if it opens via QR, it does not necessarily mean the card is faulty. Since NFC settings or the reading position may also be involved, check each condition one by one.

Step 1: Check the Reading Smartphone's Compatibility

The device to check is not the smartphone of the person holding the business card, but the device reading the business card. Check the model name and look up NFC compatibility and reading methods in the manufacturer's product specifications or user manual. Do not assume that "all smartphones are the same" or that "it must open for business cards because it can be used for payments."

If you are using a company-issued device or other device with restrictions on changing settings, please follow those rules. There is no need to disable management settings or security features to receive a business card. If changes cannot be made, use another sharing method.

Check iPhone Background Reading Requirements

Apple states that iPhones from the iPhone XS onward support background reading of NFC tags. On supported devices, a notification appears when a tag is read, and you tap the notification to proceed to the content. If the device is locked, you will be prompted to unlock it before the content is shared.

Additionally, background reading may not be available while using the camera or Apple Pay Wallet, or when in Airplane Mode. Simply having the screen on does not necessarily meet the requirements. Please check the supported models and restrictions in the official Apple background reading guide.

This guide pertains to background reading and does not indicate the operation of all iPhones or all NFC tags.

Check NFC Settings by Model on Android

Android devices vary by manufacturer and model in their setting names and display locations. Check the NFC section in the settings screen or user manual to see if it is enabled on available devices.

Google Pixel's official help provides instructions on enabling NFC. If you are using a Pixel, please refer to the Google Pixel NFC settings guide. Do not assume that devices from other manufacturers have the same screen layout; check the manufacturer's manual instead. The linked page includes payment explanations, but it does not provide instructions for adding a payment card or configuring payment settings to read business cards.

Step 2: Check the Screen and Reading Position

The Share-Me usage guide lists checking whether the screen is on, whether you are tapping the reading area, and whether NFC is enabled on Android as troubleshooting points when it does not respond to a tap. Official Share-Me Guide

Check the reading position for each device. Instead of tapping the card against an arbitrary location on the smartphone, refer to the NFC antenna or sensor location in the manual. For Pixel, you can check the hardware diagram by model. It is important not to assume a fixed position, such as always in the center for Android.

If the case contains another IC card or similar item, record this as part of the troubleshooting. Google explains that other NFC chips nearby, such as payment cards, can affect reading on Pixel devices. If the case or card can be safely removed, you can check if there is a difference when it is removed. However, do not assume the case is the cause, nor disassemble the device or business card.

Changing the position, settings, and case all at once makes it difficult to determine which change caused a response. After changing one item, check whether a notification appears, then proceed to the next item to make it easier to organize the situation.

Step 3: Check the Status After the Notification Appears

If a notification appears, treat it separately from a situation where "it cannot be read at all." When you open the notification, check which screen or message is displayed. Also check the link to see if it is the intended service URL.

If the web page does not open, check whether you have an internet connection and whether the same profile can be opened from the QR code. For both QR codes and NFC, check whether the linked page can be displayed. This does not mean that using a QR code eliminates the need for a connection.

If a different profile or unexpected page opens, check the profile linkage and sharing destination on the provider's end. Since Share-Me also has a direct link feature that goes directly to a specified site, you cannot conclude that it is faulty simply because something other than the profile is displayed. The owner should change the settings, and do not ask the recipient to perform account operations.

Troubleshooting Notes to Keep When the Problem Persists

Having the following records will allow you to convey the situation beyond "it does not respond" when making an inquiry. Do not fill in unchecked items with guesses; leave them as "unconfirmed."

NFC business card and device used:
Reading smartphone model/OS:
Symptoms: No notification / Does not open after notification / Different destination displayed
Screen status:
NFC settings checked: Completed / Unconfirmed / Item unknown
Confirmed reading position and official materials referenced:
Presence of case or nearby IC cards:
Does the same profile open from the QR code:
Displayed message (excluding personal information):
What was tried and the result:

If another compatible device is available, obtaining the owner's permission to check whether the same business card produces a notification can provide additional clues. However, do not conclude that it is compatible with all devices or that the card is faulty based solely on whether it worked or did not work on one device.

There is no need to include passwords or authentication codes in your inquiry. If the problem persists, consult the official support channel of the service you purchased, providing the necessary records.

With Share-Me, You Can Share via QR Code When NFC Cannot Be Used

Share-Me states that you can share a profile from a QR code when it does not respond to a tap. You can also download the QR code for your electronic business card and include it on a paper business card or document.

Before exchanging business cards, check whether the intended profile opens from the QR code, and have it ready to present immediately on the day. This allows you to choose another way to share even if checking the NFC takes time. After the QR code is read, also confirm whether the page is displayed on the other person's screen.
